Mallorca

Mallorca was titled crown jewel of the Balearic Islands for good reason. This popular resort destination is truly a sight to behold and experience with its secluded coves, stunning Mediterranean beaches, limestone mountains and incredible Spanish architecture from the stone-built villages to the 13th century Santa Maria cathedral. The island with its sunny personality has a long and fascinating history having been occupied by the Romans in 123 BC. These days however, holidaymakers and bloggers love to experience its mild climate, the unforgettable Mediterranean cuisine and lifestyle which includes shopping in the exclusive boutiques of Passeig del Born.

Tipping.

Restaurants and bars- In general, the more informal a place is, the less common tipping will be. When ordering a coffee or beer in Spain, virtually nobody will leave a tip—especially if that's all you order. Tipping is also not expected in the majority of sit-down restaurants.

Taxi- Generally speaking, most cab drivers in Spain appreciate but do not expect tips.

Hotels- Unless it's a major international hotel, porters are not normally available to help carry bags but if they are and you wish to tip, a euro per bag is the norm for hotel tipping.

Lingo in Mallorca.

Just like any other Spanish nation, people in Mallorca usually speak the two main languages - Spanish (otherwise referred to as Castilian or Castellano) and Mallorquí. But since the island sees millions of tourists each year, English and German have become commonplace. We got you covered though in any case. Here’s a couple phrases to use when on this sunny island.

General lingo.

Uep! Com anam? = Hi, how are you? / How’s it going? (Mallorquín)

Buenos días = Good morning

Buenas tardes = Good afternoon

Buenas noches = Good evening

Betuadeu = For God’s sake! (Mallorquín)

Yo entiendo, yo no entiendo = I understand, I don’t understand

A qué hora sale el próximo tren? = What time does the next train leave?

Eating out/ shopping lingo.

Quant és? = How much is it? (Mallorquín)

Me pots posar un... ? = Can I order a…? (Mallorquín)

Dónde hay un restaurante? = Where is a restaurant?

Busco un hotel = I’m looking for a hotel

Una mesa para dos, tres, cuatro = A table for two, three, four

Anam a pegar un capfico? = Do you want to take a dip?

Get your flirt on!

Mos deim coses = I will call you / let’s keep in touch

Hace calor aqui, o eres tù? = Is it hot in here or is it just you?

Puedo comprarte una bebida? = Can I buy you a drink?

Ésta es una canción excelente. ¿Quieres bailar conmigo = This is a great song. Would you like to dance?

Transport from Palma de Mallorca Airport.

There are 4 ways to get from Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) to Mallorca - by taxi, bus, airport transfer, car rental

Taxi.

The most convenient way to get to downtown Palma from the airport is by taking a Palma airport taxi. Not only do they offer fast door-to-door services taking only 20 minutes to the city centre, travelling in the comfort of a private air-conditioned vehicle is a luxury under the hot spanish sun.

Bus.

Another way to get to the centre of Palma de Mallorca is by taking the EMT airport bus. This is a much cheaper option if you are travelling alone or in a small group. You will need to take the EMT bus No. 1 to downtown Palma. The EMT bus runs every 15 minutes from the airport and stops right in the heart of the city, at Plaça d’Espanya; where most major bus lines and train terminals are located.

Car rental.

To get around the island of Mallorca a good idea would be to rent a car. You can either do it online or directly at the airport. Some of the car rental companies like Goldcar, Record Go Mallorca and Sixt have their offices at the airport.

Airport transfer.

Booking a private transfer is a great option for smaller families or a group of friends if you want to get to your destination without spending time on public transportation. Book a transfer online, the price will be fixed no matter which location in Palma you need to go to and your driver will wait for you at the airport holding a sign with your name.

Best time to travel.

March to May, when average temperatures are in the 60s and 70s and the crowds of summer tourists haven't yet descended on the island.

Best places to stay in Mallorca

By Gustaf Ekelund

Mallorca, with its beautiful sandy beaches, cozy artists' villages, fine dining, and magnificent hiking trails, constitute an entire miniature continent! This small but entrancing island is impressive and very easy to get around on. But where should you stay? What are the best hotels in Majorca? My own favorites are found in Palma, just outside Palma and in the small port of Soller.
